How to Get Your Dog Started Playing Frisbee

Playing frisbee with your dog is a great way to exercise your dog and entertain them at the same time. I've met several people over the years that want to play frisbee with their dog, and they just don't know where to start, or they've tried and don't know what to do when the dog isn't getting it. Afterall, it looks easy - why can't all dogs do it?

Here's a tip: before you ever throw the disc for your dog, you want to engage your dog's prey drive. You can do that by throwing rollers. For this exercise you'll need at least 2 discs. A roller throw is a frisbee that is rolling on the ground. The dog will instinctly go after the disc, and hopefully catch it while it is still rolling. Once your dog brings back the first disc, throw the second roller immediately. Your dog will most likely drop the first disc to go after the second one. Once you accomplish this - you're on your way! We'll discuss other tips in upcoming posts.

The Colorado Disc Dogs encourage all levels of expertise. We hold events throughout the year all across the Colorado Front Range. Whether you want to compete or just learn to play frisbee for fun, CDD can help you reach your goals. We offer spring training every May - a one day fun event in the park where you can learn to throw, learn to work with your dog, even learn a few freestyle moves.
